World first LNG powered container ship

The World’s first LNG powered container ship has been launched in San Diego in the U.S. on Saturday the 18th April.

Named the Isla Bella, the 232m long vessel is capable of carrying 3100 twenty foot containers. San Diego-based General Dynamics NASSCO built the Isla Bella for TOTE Inc a New Jersey based company that have officers in Jacksonville.

Powered by liquified natural gas (LNG) the Isla Bella will meet new emission restrictions for the Caribbean  that have been enforced by the Environmental Protection Agency.

This vessel will service a route between Jacksonville and Puerto Rico. Given the size of the vessel the amount of cargo being transported on this route will now double.

Another LNG vessel will be built for TOTE Inc early next year.  Together both vessels will cost a whopping US$350 million.
