The first official order for the first 20,000 TEU (twenty equivalent unit) container ship has just been made.
The deal has been strongly linked with Evergreen Line, however some analysts are tipping that the vessels will be actually destined for Mitsui OSK Line.
We have to wonder just how large container ships will become… In January of this year, we reported that a world record was broken when the Maersk McKinney Moller was loaded with a mammoth 18,168 twenty foot containers. This giant container ship hauled this record load from Algeciras, Spain to Maersk’s transhipment port, Tanjung Pelepas in Malaysia. But we cannot forget the CSCL Globe which can take 19,000 TEU!
The World’s first 20,000 TEU vessel is due to be completed in early 2018. Construction will be carried out by Imabari Shipbuilding in Japan. The vessels are to be approx 400m in length and about 59m wide.
