Picture this: it’s a dark and stormy night in the middle of the Pacific Ocean back in 1992. 29,000 plastic toys yellow ducks, blue turtles and green frogs fall from a container vessel into the choppy, angry sea. Ever since that night, these toys have been floating around the world. They have been found all over the world. Alaska, Japan and Hawaii just to name a few places.
These toys were enclosed in a 40 footer, but after being knocked overboard along with some other containers, the contents spilled. The container then sank to the ocean floor.
Does this happen often? The World Shipping Council, who represent 90% of the container ship capacity, advise that no more than 350 containers are lost at sea every year. These units are generally lost due to incorrect stowage, high seas and severe weather.
