For a mere $190 million dollars, a danish shipping company will build you the biggest container ship in the world. On July 2, 2013, the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller made it’s way out of the shipbuilding yard in South Korea. This vessel was the first in Maersk’s new “Triple E” series.

At a massive 400 metres long, 59 metres wide and 73 metres high, this vessel is now making the rounds on the Asia – Europe route. It can carry a record breaking capacity of 18000 TEU (twenty foot equivalent unit), which is 2000 TEU more than the previous largest freight ship.
To put this vessel into scale, the most frequent vessels to arrive into Fremantle are 172 metres long and carry a tiny 1700 TEU – these are feeder vessels between Singapore and Fremantle.
Maersk point out that these super vessels are more energy efficient, and much better for the environment. By reducing the ships fuel consumption, it also reduces the CO2 emissions by 20%.
