Schools in China and Hong Kong have been closed with hundreds of flights cancelled due to severe tropical cyclone Nida.
Nida sustained winds of up to 105km/h but has since been downgraded to a tropical storm.
Ferries between Hong Kong and the gambling strip of Cotai in Macau were also suspended.
The seas have been swelling with the strongest typhoon to hit the Pearl River Delta since 1983.
Delays are expected with all vessels in and around the region.
