Friday the 23rd January 2015 was a huge day for Fremantle Port. Two large harbour tugs escorted the MSC Buxcliff into the harbour.
This 300m beauty is currently the BIGGEST container ship to berth in Fremantle Port.
We’ve put together some interesting stats on this boxship (as they are affectionately called):
- Length: 300.4m long
- Max twenty foot containers: 6628
- Max speed: 27 knots
- Max draught: 14.5m
As Fremantle Port celebrated this huge victory, across the ocean in another part of the world another record was being broken.
On the 26th January, the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller departed from Algeciras, Spain on it’s way to Tanjung Pelepas, Malaysia.
The ginormous Triple E container ship sailed with a never-before-seen amount of containers loaded onto one vessel, 18,168 twenty footers!
We’ve been a little obsessed with the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller ever since it’s maiden voyage. We even built a lego version of the vessel!
Here’s some exciting details on this mammoth vessel:
- Length: 400m long
- Max twenty foot containers: 18,000 (plus a few more as per the above!)
- Max speed: 23 knots
- Max draught: 16.02m
Two impressive events in the shipping industry for 2015 (and it’s only January..).
