Australian Customs have recently issued fines to a freight forwarder after they incorrectly cleared a consignment through Customs using the SAC (self assessment clearance – for goods under AUD1000).
Based on details received from the consignee/client the forwarder completed the self assessment clearance, only to have the shipment stopped by Customs. Customs then demanded more details on the shipment.
Subsequently it was revealed that it was a commercial consignment with a $11,000+ value and approx. $1800 in taxes payable. The freight forwarder was fined a large penalty following this error.
It is common practice for our brokers here at EES Shipping to ensure that any shipments under $1,000 are assessed further than the documentation provided. It is, and always will be, a requirement of ours to ensure that we have, in writing, a statement from the owner of the goods advising that the shipment that is being cleared is under AUD1000.
