There has been no rest for the officers of Australian Customs and Border Protection Services (ACBPS) and the Australian Federal Police (AFP) this New Years break.
The ACBPS officers were in attendance on Saturday 28th December at the NSW Air Cargo facility to examine a consignment of two boxes that arrived from the United States. The shipment was labeled as nutrition vitamins.
This inspection discovered 735 vitamin bottles which contained more than 48,500 capsules of a white powdery substance. Initial testing determined this material to be methamphetamine.
With the AFP (Australian Federal Police) taking over the investigation, they consequently executed a search warrant in Canley Heights, NSW, after which a 25 year old man was arrested.
“No matter how sophisticated the concealment, our skilled officers have the technology and expertise to detect these dangerous drugs at the border,” ACBPS Acting National Manager Cargo Operations, John Ikin, stated – sending a strong warning to potential importers of illicit materials.
The 25 year old man was charged with one count of attempting to possess a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug, contrary to section 307.5 by virtue of section 11.1 of the Criminal Code Act 1995.
The maximum penalty for this offence is 25 years imprisonment and/or a fine of up to $1,275,000.
