Ningbo – Zhoushan Port Merger

With a larger scale port consolidation due to begin soon, the most recent long-awaited port merger has been completed.

The Port of Ningbo has merged with Zhoushan to create a super port which has been placed under Ningbo-Zhoushan Port,

The two ports, adjacent to each other in China’s Zhejiang province, have long joined hands in terminal construction and presented themselves as a port complex in a bid to strengthen their performance.

Last year, Ningbo achieved cargo throughput of 526m tonnes, while Zhoushan recorded 347m. The combined throughput of each would make the single entity the world’s busiest port. Zhoushan also has three berths approved by Beijing to receive valemax vessels.

For container throughput Ningbo ranked as the world’s fifth-busiest, handling 18.7m twenty equivalent units (TEU) in 2014. Zhoushan was much weaker — 750,000 TEU — yet has huge potential capacity, blessed by its superior natural conditions.
