Shipping containers used to house prisoners

The Victorian prison system has been put under pressure this year due to an 11 per cent growth in prisoner population. The number of incarcerated sits just under 6000 and has prompted Corrections Victoria to use 50 shipping containers to house 100 minimum security prisoners at Dhurringile prison in the state’s north.

Containers are ideal for this use as they are cost effective; they can be easily positioned and retrofitted with the usual prison cell amenities like showers, basins, beds and cupboards.

South Australia is already utilising this innovative way to house prisoners.
