October was a big month for containers through Port of Fremantle, with the highest monthly throughput since 2015, according to the latest trade data from the port.
Total containerised trade through the port last month was reported to be 65,965 TEU (twenty equivalent unit – twenty foot container), the largest numbers for a month since November 2015 when the port handled 67,868 TEU.
October’s throughput was also well above the average for the past 12 months, which stands at 60,810 TEU, and also an uptick on the previous month’s total throughput of 62,589 TEU.
Delving a little deeper into the container numbers for last month, we find Freo’s coastal trade of 9652 TEU was slightly higher than the average for the past year (8088 TEU).
Overseas trade contributed more to the uptick in container trade at the port, with total overseas trade reported at 56,313 TEU 7% more than the 12-month average of 52,722 TEU.
Overseas exports in particular contributed most to the overall increase in container trade through the port, with 32,363 TEU crossing the wharf at Fremantle headed for international markets. This is 13% more than the average for the past 12 months (28,688 TEU).
Imports through the port totalled 32,849 TEU for the month, with coastal trade accounting for 8899 TEU of the total, and containers originating from overseas were reported to be 23,950 TEU.
