Total container throughput at the Port of Fremantle picked significantly up in May, with the highest number of TEUs (twenty foot equivalent units) crossing the wharves for at least three years, according to the latest available statistics from Fremantle Ports.
May 2018’s throughput was reported to be 67,932 TEU, a 15% increase on April 2018, and a 15.5% increase on May 2017.
Throughput reaches such heights at the port rarely; last time it broke the 67,000-TEU threshold was in November and December 2017 (67,832 TEU and 67,714 TEU, respectively), and before that only in November 2015, with 67,868 TEU.
Delving into the numbers, we see this past May’s big numbers were largely driven by increases in overseas trade, both imports and exports.
Total overseas trade through Freo this past May totalled 59,625 TEU – an increase of 16% on April, and 17% on May 2017.
Breaking the port’s overseas trade down further, exports were 32,231 TEU, and imports were 28,292 TEU.
Coastal trade was also up, but the numbers are more modest. Freo’s total coastal containerised trade in May was 8307 TEU, a 6% increase on the previous month, and also a 6% increase on May 2017.
