Dozens of 40ft containers crash into water

This is the moment 44 huge shipping containers crashed into the water like enormous Lego bricks.

The astonishing footage shows the boat begin to tip before the large storage boxes topple into the Yangtze River in China.

The accident, which happened at Shanghai’s port Waigaoqiao Dock saw the 40ft long containers fall one after another like dominoes.

It is believed the ship’s balance was lost while it was being loaded.

Pan Jiefeng, a spokesman from the Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration, said three salvage vessels were dispatched to the scene by Shanghai’s Maritime Search and Rescue Center.

The rescuers worked overnight to lift the containers out of the Yangtze, with the containers cleared by 9am the following day.

Addressing environmental concerns, Mrs Jiefeng said: “The water of the Yangtze was not contaminated, as the containers did not contain hazardous materials.”

Fortunately for those involved in the clean-up, the accident did not injure or kill any workers.

It also did not disrupt the general traffic at the port, reports said.

All containers have now been retrieved with no environmental issues being recorded.
