Cool shipping facts

We’ve recently bought you six cool facts on shipping containers.

Now we’re having a look at shipping in general and pointing out some jaw dropping fun facts on this wonderful industry.

Number one

World’s Largest Container Ship

The title of the “Worlds Largest Container Ship” is changing all the time. Shipping lines are constantly having vessels built that are bigger and better than their rivals.  In late November, this prestigious title was given to the container ship CSCL Globe.  This vessel takes a whopping 19,000 twenty foot containers and is 400m long.

The CSCL Globe has now been nudged off top spot, only to be replaced with the MSC Oscar.  This mammoth vessel can hold 19,224 twenty foot containers, that’s 224 containers more than the CSCL Globe.

One 20 foot container can hold approx 10,100 Ipads – so on one voyage of the MSC Oscar there could be approx 194162400 Ipads!

The Oscar is still undertaking sea trials – with it’s first full voyage estimated to be the 25 January.

** Editor note : Move over MSC Oscar – you’ve been trumped by the MOL Triumph!  Head here for the full post.

Number two

World’s busiest container port

Shanghai, China is currently ranked number 1 as the world’s busiest container port. This ranking is based on cargo throughput.  In 2012 alone, Shanghai Port handled 32.5 MILLION twenty-foot containers.

To put this amount into perspective, Fremantle Port handles approx 670,000 per year.  WOW.

Fun fact – out of the top ten busiest container ports – seven are in China

Number three

Did you know that 95% of the world’s cargo moves by ship. While FedEx/DHL and similar courier companies can arrange a quick transit time, they only manage a small percentage of goods.Due to higher costs, it still makes more financial sense to transport goods in high volume ships.

Number four

A container ship travels the equivalent of three-quarters of the way to the moon and back in one year during its regular travel across the oceans. That’s approx 288,300kms!
