The Port of Singapore has seen a serge in total container and cargo throughput in the month of May, hitting levels not seen in more than a year.
The number of shipping containers rose 1.6 per cent from May 2015 to 2.665 million twenty footers. This was the first year on year rise in 15 months and was a staggering 5.4 per cent higher than the figures taken in April.
Total cargo throughput in May was up as well, rising 7.7 per cent from a year earlier to about 52.257 million tonnes. It was also 1.9 per cent higher than in April, according to preliminary estimates from the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA Singapore).
