GM – the driving force behind this unique project.
A brand new type of residence is being built in Detroit thanks to a new project driven by General Motors. The first occupied container homestead is currently being built in the carpark of GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant and we can’t wait to see the finished product.
Plans have been made for this container home.
320 square feet of living space (including two bedrooms, a kitchen and a bathroom) will be squeezed into this re-purposed forty-foot container.
The homestead will be housed on an agricultural plot in Detroit’s New Centre neighbourhood, which is run by non-profit organisation Michigan Urban Farming Initiative (MUFI). General Motors will also be supplying a heap of scrap building materials and a team of employee volunteers from the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant to assist with the construction.
Once built an agriculture student/intern will act as a caretaker, residing in the home all year round.
Unique furniture will be constructed from old shipping pallets.
GM has revealed that the home will be built using 85% scrap, which is welcome news for our planet. Plywood from pallets will even be used to clad the interior walls and also construct some furniture components.
We are looking forward to seeing the finished home.
