Eleven shipping containers full of pineapples have been seized by Spanish police after it was discovered that 200kgs of cocaine had been hidden inside the fruits.
The bizarre shipment arrived in the southwestern port of Algeciras from an unnamed Central American port.
“Among the thousands of fresh pineapples inside the containers, they found fruit that had been hollowed out and stuffed with drugs and then covered with a yellow wax that simulated the color of pineapple pulp.” The Ministry of Interior advised.
So let’s recap:
1. Wrap cocaine in containers and coat with yellow wax to resemble pineapple flesh
1. Cut pineapple in half, leave the outer shell remaining
2. Scoop out the flesh of the pineapple and replace with cocaine containers
3. Stick both halves of the pineapple back together
No-one will notice..
Clever or clueless?
With international drug enforcement increasing within the last few years, it has forced drug dealers to become a lot more creative with their concealments. Pseudo ephedrine in liquid form in Australia, ketamine hidden in rice in Canada and cocaine discovered in crates of bananas in Berlin – just to name a few.
It has been reported that this shipment of cocaine pineapples was destined to two companies, one in Madrid, the other in Sant Quirze del Valles near Barcelona. Both companies are reportedly run by Spanish Nationals of Colombian origin.
The origin of the containers will not be announced by the Spanish government. This comes after a Venezuelan official plans to sue Spain and the U.S. for calling his country a “cocaine hub”.
