Car carrier in trouble

Modern Express, a roll on roll off pure car and truck carrier (PCTC), remains in trouble in the Bay of Biscay.

The vessel, which currently moving 3,600 tonnes of timber and construction equipment, was sailing from the country of Gabon to Le Havre, France when it developed a loss of stability and subsequent list in the Bay.

All twenty-two crew members have been dramatically evacuated by two Spanish search and rescue helicopters. Weather on scene was severe with gale force winds of Force 8 and waves of 5 to 6 meters. The ship was first reported to be listing at 40 degrees to starboard.

The vessel’s list has appeared to have worsened, with fears that the vessel is taking on water.

The owner of the vessel has contracted Smit Salvage to carry out salvage operations. More details to follow.
