Aircargo shipment of ivory discovered in Perth

Investigations remain on-going after the discovery by the Australian Customs and Border Protection Services (ACBPS) of 110 kilograms of ivory in an aircargo shipment in Perth.

The shipment was being transhipped via Perth to Malaysia, originating from Malawi, Africa.

“The smuggling of endangered wildlife and wildlife parts is a very serious issue and we are dedicated to shutting down this horrible and cruel trade,” ACBPS Regional Commander Western Australia, Rod O’Donnell said.

The discovery was made during a routine inspection of cargo. Australia has some of the strongest wildlife protection laws in the world, and officers have been commended for the find.

“This seizure shows Australia’s commitment to protecting the world’s endangered wildlife for future generations.”
