2016 Port Statistics

There was some huge records broken last year in relation to throughput at container terminals around the world.

We’ve complied a few of these numbers below:

Singapore

Port of Singapore Authority (PSA) handled 30.59 million twenty foot containers (TEU) during 2016, which was a slight decline of 0.1%.

Shanghai

The port of Shanghai handled a record amount of twenty foot containers in 2016 with a total number of 37.13 million. This was a rise from 2015 when 36.54 million were recorded.

Port of Los Angeles

Cargo volumes in Los Angeles hit a Western Hemisphere high of 8,856,782 twenty foot containers for 2016.  796,536 of these twenty footers were moved in December, marking this month as the busiest December in 110 years.

Antwerp

In 2016, terminals in Antwerp breached the 10 million twenty foot container mark for the first time ever.

Fremantle

In vast comparison, in 2015-16 Fremantle Port handled 715,110 twenty foot containers!

2016 was a turbulent year for shipping.  “2016 served up another difficult year for the port and shipping industry. We had to grapple with sluggish global trade, weak demand for container shipment, sustained excess shipping capacity and depressed freight rates,” Chief executive Tan Chong Meng, PSA said.
